First Grade

First grade is a year of important transitions. First graders progress from having beginner reading and writing skills to becoming beginning readers and writers. They read and write more often with greater comprehension and ability. Our curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, integrating key character traits and God’s truth throughout the day. Communication skills such as listening, obeying, conflict resolution, and serving with kindness are taught on a daily basis from a Biblical Worldview. Students learn through whole group, small group, and individualized instruction, and actively participate in developmentally appropriate learning centers. Our Abeka Language Arts curriculum emphasizes phonics, oral reading, comprehension, vocabulary, public speaking, and creative writing. Our Abeka Math curriculum emphasizes number concepts to 1000, money, time, the calendar, addition, and subtraction. In addition, Abeka’s Math curriculum provides opportunities for students to utilize their Language Arts and critical thinking skills to solve various word problems.
